David McCauley Artist Statement

ARTIST STATEMENT:

As an artist and an avid sailor the Marine Stadium has been an intriguing structure. It’s sharp angles and geometric shape looming in the distance along the edge of Biscayne Bay. Its weather worn concrete standing in contrast to the bright and colorful graffiti. Its architecture slowly being enveloped by nature. Reclaimed. Prime example of urban decay. The structure resonates its historic past. Almost like an archaeological site being uncovered. The discovery and research of this archaeological site gave me the idea of working with hieroglyphics for my artwork. The close proximity to the ocean also steered me to incorporate language from the sea. Reef. The combination of these two concepts, hieroglyphics and reef, led me to arrive at the completed work presented.
